IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Changes to the 2021 London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Recruitment Process

Updated Tuesday 17th November 2020 -  IMPORTANT PLEASE READ PRIOR TO CONTACTING THE LaKSS RECRUITMENT TEAM.

Unfortunately, owing to covid-related circumstances we have had to adapt the process used for long listing AFP applications. LaKSS AUoA would normally longlist applications using the confirmed decile score, and shortlist using additional achievements. Unfortunately, owing to the pandemic, many medical schools were not able to confirm accurate decile scores in time for them to be used for this

As you may know, LaKSS AUoA is very popular, with 648 applications received this year for 127 posts. Ordinarily LaKSS AUoA only has the capacity to provide an interview ratio of 2 applicants to 1 post, so 254 applicants would be offered an interview. The challenge is to select these candidates from the 600+ who apply, appropriately and fairly while ensuring the robustness of the process to select those who would benefit most from an academic foundation programme.

For example, during the two-year foundation programme, appointed candidates will have to achieve all standard foundation competences in less clinical time, as they will be undertaking academic rather than clinical activities for a 4-month period. This makes it important that they already possess good clinical skills, which are tested at interview and, potentially, within decile scores.

Information relating to historic decile score cut offs is included in the LaKSS AUoA prospectus for information only. All applicants have had the opportunity to apply should they have wished to do so. Taking into account concerns raised with our proposed longlisting mechanism and the removal of the decile score, we have reviewed our process and consulted with the BMA to agree a revised approach. With additional assessor capacity we will now be scoring all 4 domains: publications, presentations, additional degrees and prizes, within the applications for all 648 applicants. These scores will be used to ascertain which 254 applicants will be invited to attend an interview.

As regards to the decile score, although we cannot use it as part of the longlisting process, we plan to use this, once available, to contribute to the overall score and ranking, as published within our London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Academic Foundation Programme Recruitment prospectus.

We are sorry that it has been necessary to amend the process at this stage but hope that you will appreciate that the unprecedented circumstances have necessitated these changes. We also hope that the amendments to the process as listed above go some way to mitigate concerns.  They are in line with our published information, which included a statement to the effect that we might need to make changes in year because of the pandemic.

Please note evidence submitted on the application form will be scored. The London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex AUoA do not require applicants to upload evidence to support their application. Applicants are instructed to simply detail their educational achievements on the AFP application form. We cannot accept any evidence submitted outside of the application window.
