Rehabilitation Medicine

Introduction

Welcome to the London deanery programme for specialty training in Rehabilitation Medicine. The Training Scheme in Rehabilitation Medicine offers a comprehensive and structured training programme for Specialist Registrars seeking the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Rehabilitation medicine is mainly focused on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation management of people with disabling medical conditions.

Rehabilitation medicine offers you an opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary team where your contribution is in understanding how disease interacts with all other aspects of the person. As a trainee your role is to help the team and the person achieve the best outcome possible.

There are two Rehabilitation Medicine training programmes in London – North and South London. Both offer rotations between 3-5 centres to cover all aspects of the rehabilitation medicine curriculum. There is flexibility built into both programmes to allow trainees to develop areas of special interest in neurological, amputee or musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Optional modules are also available. Trainees will also be encouraged to participate in research and will be supported to undertake higher degrees if they wish. Out of Programme (OOP) experience to other centres may be arranged on an individual basis to provide experience in specialist areas not fully covered within individual programmes.

Training is based around both the experience gained from attachments and from a programme of training days. Each attachment provides experience in the core areas of Rehabilitation medicine.

Training programme

A PAN London STC manages appointments to the rotations and oversees quality of training. Once appointed trainees are allocated to a geographical London region (South Thames London and North Thames London). When preferencing a sector / rotation, applicants should be prepared to train in all the trusts stated during the programme.

We provide training at world-renowned training institutions as well as a number of excellent district general hospitals. Working with a diverse healthcare population across London, trainees will treat a cross-range of patients and medical conditions in urban communities. London with its rich variety of cultures, nationalities and social backgrounds offers any trainee a full and rewarding experience in Rehabilitation medicine. All trainees have both clinical and educational supervisors who provide clinical supervision and educational mentorship. Training programmes are designed to ensure training in all aspects of the curriculum.
